Universities Space Research Association (USRA) administers a three-pronged approach to strengthening the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce pipeline that includes: the AFRL Scholars Program, AFRL Scholars Professionals, and the University Research and Engagement Program (UREP). This portfolio of enriching programs aligns directly with the Federal STEM Strategy and Department of Defense (DoD) STEM mission for the U.S. Department of the Air Force by offering immersive project-based learning opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows.

AFRL Scholars Program

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Scholars Program offers stipend-paid internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate-level university students pursuing STEM degrees, as well as upper-level high school students. The selected interns gain valuable hands-on experiences working with full-time AFRL scientists and engineers on cutting-edge research and technology and are able to contribute to unique, research-based projects.

AFRL Scholar Professionals

AFRL Scholars Professionals (SPs) offers recent college graduates comprehensive research opportunities to contribute broadly to the advancement of the U.S. Department of the Air Force. Selected SPs will work in synergy with scientists and engineers on select research focus areas that closely align with AFRL’s objectives to meet current scientific and technical needs.

UREP

UREP was designed to engage institutions of higher education through the facilitation of AFRL research that leads to the continued advancement of the U.S. Department of the Air Force. UREP aims to provide undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellows with authentic research opportunities to stimulate interest and improve retention in STEM careers within AFRL.
