Zachary Kahl Funke
Captain Zachary Funke is a research engineer at the Air Force Maui Optical & Supercomputing Site and is the deputy program manager for the Satellite Characterization & Custody research program. Zack is an astronautical engineer by education, training, and experience, with a B.S. in Astronautical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a SM in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Zack's prior work experience includes cubesat systems engineering for a NASA Ames Research Center Europa mission concept, control systems design and analysis for the ISS SPHERES experiment at the MIT Space Systems Lab, space systems engineering for vital DoD communications and space-based imaging satellites at Schriever Air Force Base, and electro-optical space domain awareness. At AMOS, Zack strives to mature technology and algorithms to solve one of the U.S. Space Force's most challenging problem sets: whole-domain situational awareness of satellite activity in the Earth-Moon system that is both comprehensive and autonomous, while also responsive, timely, and accurate. Zack believes information is foundational to our country's endeavor to maintain Earth orbit as a safe, secure, and peaceful environment for generations to come. Zack's interests are in astrodynamics, orbit estimation, relative motion, characterization of rendezvous & proximity operations, and the design of nonlinear and robust control and estimation systems for SDA applications.
