Derek Blaine Barbee
Captain Derek Barbee is a Program Officer at AFOSR. In his capacity as Program Officer at AFOSR, he is responsible for the execution of the Dynamic Materials and Interactions (DMI) and caretaking of the Aerospace Composite Materials (ACM) portfolios. Prior to this position, Capt Barbee served as Assistant Program Officer of the Energy, Combustion, and Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics (ECNET) and DMI portfolios. In his role as Program Officer, Capt Barbee is responsible for the planning and shaping of Air Force basic science strategy in the areas of energetic solids and structural composite materials for the next 20 years of DoD RDT&E efforts.
Capt Barbee previously served as a Lead Research Chemist at AFRL/711 HPW at the Human Effectiveness Directorate, Optical Radiation Bioeffects Branch (RHDO). During his time at RHDO, Capt Barbee directed research efforts into the effects of IR stimulation on cellular metabolic processes and the radiation properties of melanin under various photon irradiation energies and intensities. Though Capt Barbee initially began his career as a developmental engineer (62E1G), he currently serves the USAF in his capacity as a research chemist (61C). Capt Barbee is a graduate of the Defense Language Institute for Czech Language, Rice University with a PhD in Materials Science and NanoEngineering, and the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) with a degree in Materials Chemistry and minor in Russian.
